Given that most Bollywood films in the past couple years have crashed and burned at the box office, one wonders what destiny has in store for Jagga Jasoos, an epic adventure film starring Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif, that opens on Friday, July 14.
What Jasoos does have going for it is its gorgeous mise-en-scène (as seen in the film’s trailer), its interesting premise and the red-hot star power of Ranbir Kapoor.
Those reasons alone however cannot guarantee the film’s success.
One red flag is that the film’s two leads, Kapoor and Kaif’s off-screen tumultuous relationship allegedly affected their performances in the film causing the director, Anurag Basu, to ask them for reshoots which in turn delayed the film’s release.
This may not necessarily sound like a cause for alarm however the last big-budget Bollywood film to be delayed due to reshoots was Fitoor, a film that lost its studio, UTV Motion Pictures, so much capital that it had to shut its doors on film production for the indefinite future.
Add to that the pendulum-like unpredictability of Bollywood audiences these days and how they respond to big-budget films leaves Jagga Jasoos in murky waters.
